About the Workshop
CommNet2 is delighted to be hosting our 3rd PhD School concurrently with the Next GWiN 5th International Workshop on Next Generation Green Wireless Networks. Next GWiN 2018 is the latest in a series of successful, international workshops that focus on the state of the art in the field of green communications. This is an absolutely crucial topic for researchers to be able to understand, 5G is fast becoming a tangible technology with first deployments being prepared and the standard taking a clear shape. However, with new ambitious goals and high data rates of 5G, energy issues are now more important than ever.
This year, Next GWiN 2018 will be hosted in Sheffield (UK), and those attending the 3rd CommNet2 PhD School will also be attending the Next GWiN 2018 workshop (17th and 18th Sept) free of charge, as well as taking part in an extra day of in-depth research training (19th Sept).
The Next GWiN workshop over days 1 and 2 has a truly excellent line up of speakers covering...
...and day 3 will be a day of hands-on, interactive researcher training led by expert facilitator Dr. Kevin Byron.
This really is a fantastic opportunity for PhD students from a diverse range of backgrounds to network, and to increase their understanding of the energy efficiency aspects of ICT, irrespective of the main focus of their projects. Our School aims to raise awareness amongst the PGR community of the importance of considering 'green' implications early on and to inspire creative, multi-disciplinary thinking.
The school is free to attend for a limited number of PhD students registered at UK Universities and we will fund 3 x nights accommodation for successful applicants in the city of Sheffield and cover costs of socials and a conference dinner. We are currently open for applications, students must be nominated by a supervisor, see here, please don't delay as spaces will be limited to ~40.
CommNet2 PhD Schools
CommNet2 is an EPSRC funded network which aims to build a strong community of researchers and innovators working in Information and Communication Technology in the UK. Membership is free and open to all those in Academia and Industry, across the Engineering and Computer Science disciplines. As a network, and through our programme of activities, we hope to identify and define the most important research challenges that need to be solved in ICT today so as to promote community wide-solutions that ensure the UK remains a leading member of this important global sector. Of particular importance to CommNet2 is for us to build capacity by engaging with PhD students, Early Career Researchers and those recently graduated in Industry. It is vital that the future of ICT (i.e. you!) feels supported by, and a valued part of, our CommNet2 network.
Consequently, we have designed a unique School format designed to benefit you as the future researchers and innovators in UK ICT by:
Inspiring you to think creatively about your own work: The rate at which technological innovation is advancing in the modern world means that it has never been more crucial to be able to nurture a creative mindset in your approach to research. Problems are an inevitable part of any PhD, but the workshop on day 3 will equip you with new techniques and approaches to tackle them with creativity, both on your own and in a team. Being creative and critical in your thinking will set you apart.
With the help of our expert speakers, our school will guide you through the fundamental science behind the latest developments at the cutting edge of research in a number of Energy Efficiency related topics, and will also showcase their industrial application. Each CommNet2 PhD School is based around a ‘hot topic’ theme, in 2016, it was Massive MIMO and Network Functions Virtualization. In March 2017, it was applications of Security.
Connecting you as early career researchers and helping you to grown your own professional networks: CommNet2 sees incredible value in building networks that are multidisciplinary, and that span institutions in both Academia and Industry. To this end, we hope that the school gives you the opportunity to spend time cultivating your own network of contacts in ICT, both during the days, but also during our social activities on days 1 and 2.
Message from Chair
"I am delighted to announce that the 2018 International Workshop on Next Generation Green Wireless Networks (Next-GWiN 2018) will take place from 17th to 18th September 2018 in the University of Sheffield, UK. The city of Sheffield, which is historically known for its steel manufacturing, is a vibrant city bustling with innovative manufacturing, financial, and service industries. As the UK's greenest city, it is the gateway to the famous Peak District - the UK's first National Park. This 2-day event includes keynote speeches, invited expert talks, panels, PhD student sessions, and demonstration. The conference will bring together a cross section of researchers, especially early career and PhD, interested in energy efficiency in future communications networks."
