Connected Communities is an emerging research area investigating the implications of establishing highly connected, data-intensive, diverse communities and focusing on the design, deployment and management of socio-technical urban digital infrastructures. A major objective of this research area is fostering sustainability and economic prosperity as well as citizens’ safety, health, security and quality of life. This First UK-UAE Connected Communities workshop will allow UK and UAE-based researchers to establish collaborations on the design and management of digital infrastructures supporting Connected Communities in diverse geographical, economic and cultural environments, paying particular attention to mitigating potentially disruptive aspects and handling the residual urban-rural divide. A key priority will be developing new data-driven approaches to engage community participation and foster business initiatives. The workshop aims to unlock the huge potential of UK-UAE collaboration toward establishing culturally diverse communities with high levels of prosperity, sustainability and well-being.
The Workshop will cover three days with each day targeting a specific theme:
• Theme 1 – Fostering data-driven innovation in Smart Communities design and planning
• Theme 2 – Towards a resilient and sustainable digital infrastructure – Internet-of-Things (IoT), Communications, and Transport
• Theme 3 – Prevention of isolation and marginalisation within Smart Communities – challenges in UAE and UK
The Workshop will be hosted at Khalifa University in collaboration with EBTIC Innovation Centre. EBTIC has a long experience in bringing together UAE and UK-based decision-makers. For this initiative, EBTIC will be able to build on the success of the Smart Communities theme it established by hosting the 2015 International Smart Cities Initiative Workshop (SCI’15- ), which under the title “Towards a Smarter City in the Local Context” discussed the need for a smarter approach towards smart cities for the local UAE region, taking into account academia, industry, and government interests. Thanks to the success of SCI ’15, EBTIC has established strong links with like-minded local communities of practitioners and researchers, creating a forum to share and discuss the practicalities of the step towards smart cities that are specifically relevant to the UAE context but also important for the UK. In addition, worthy of note is a related Call for Papers to the ACM Transactions on Internet Technology (TOIT) Special Issue devoted to Emerging Technologies for Connected Communities–

Tuesday 8th March 2016
The IET, Savoy Place, London, WC2R 0BL
The CommNet2: UK Research Strategy Community Organisation in Communications, Mobile Computing and Networking within the EPSRC ICT Portfolio, is holding its launch event on Tuesday 8thMarch 2016. Building on its predecessor CommNet, CommNet2 aims to bring together the UK academic community engaged in ICT research in order to identify, discuss and address the major ICT challenges of the future. The event will include a range of presentations, expert talks from industry and academia, a selection of interactive workshops, and networking opportunities during the lunch break.
The workshop aims to identify the research challenges facing the development of future network infrastructure and its resilience. The UK government identifies network infrastructure and resilience as fundamental to the UK’s economic and social wellbeing. Through focused discussions duringthe workshops, participants will have the opportunity to help define a research roadmap that both identifies the key bottlenecks and their potential solutions in this field. The workshop will translate these discussions into a suitable white paper aimed at informing the UK academic research communityand EPSRC of this roadmap.
The workshop is aimed at UK academics and industry focused on research in future communications networking. The expert talks aim to engage both the Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences communities by focusing on issues of Network Infrastructure and Resilience, relevant to:
  • Developments in 5G
  • Developments in the future internet
  • Issues of vulnerability
We are pleased to be holding the event at the recently refurbished IET Savoy Place in London We will be based in the Maxwell Library on the first floor. The venue is easily accessible, within close distance to various tube stations.

Big Data services in China: Telefonica and China Unicom joint venture

January 21, 2016 in Uncategorized

Madrid/Beijing, January 5th, 2016. China Unicom and Telefónica announce that they have established a joint venture called “Smart Steps Digital Technology Company Limited” to provide big data services in China, leveraging on China Unicom’s stable and extensive basic telecommunication network and rich market experience, as well as Telefónica’s mature technology in big data services such as Smart Steps.

The new company, to be managed with a market-oriented mechanism, has a 55/45 ownership participation by China Unicom and Telefónica. The joint venture will use “Smart Steps” technology to provide location based insights and other big data related services, in the safe and efficient production environment of China Unicom.

“Smart Steps” uses anonymised, aggregated and extrapolated network data, through highly automated processing and deep denoising, provides valuable location and movement insights in a fast manner. Smart Steps is widely regarded as a world-leading service, and has a proven track record of success in markets across Europe and Latin America for some years. It has advantages such as accuracy of location, standardization of products as well as scale application of use cases. While ensuring the highest level of customer data security, the product provides enterprises and institutions with tailor-made state-of-the-art big data insights and related services, satisfying the strategic, operational and marketing needs of its customers.

It is expected that Smart Steps services can be applied extensively in China in areas such as transportation construction and operations, urban planning, tourism management, public security, financial risk control, real estate and retail analysis, business consultancy insights and macro statistics. “CommNet II: UK Research Strategy Community Organisation in Communications, Mobile Computing and Networking within the EPSRC ICT Portfolio”

November 26, 2015 in Commnet2

We are pleased to announce the launch of the new EPSRC sponsored “UK Research Strategy Community Organisation in Communications, Mobile Computing and Networking within the EPSRC ICT Portfolio” referred to as CommNet2.
Our new website is live at and you are invited to register now for information on events, news and networking activities. Please explore the site features, in particular our use of “Groups” to support community initiatives. We are planning a kick-off event in Q1 2016 shortly followed by our first challenge workshop where topics on “5G and IoT” will be discussed.
Building on its predecessor CommNet, CommNet2 aims to bring together the UK academic community engaged in ICT research in order to identify, discuss and address the major ICT challenges of the future. CommNet2’s Management Board includes Professor Timothy O’Farrell (University of Sheffield), Professor David Hutchison (University of Lancaster), Professor Gerard Parr (University of Ulster), Professor Dimitra Simeonidou (University of Bristol) and Professor Rahim Tafazolli (University of Surrey). More UK academics and Industry Partners are also members of the Advisory Board, full details available in our website.
The challenges addressed by CommNet2 necessitate a cross-disciplinary approach to research. Hence, the network will bring together academics from the electrical engineering, electronics, communications, networking, mathematics and computer science disciplines. However, the network is accessible to anyone interested in contributing to research and innovation in ICT, including both early career researchers and ICT professionals as well as established academics. Industry is also welcome to participate in our network activities.
Building on the EPSRC ICT Theme Priorities, CommNet2 will deliver a three year programme that includes networking and training events; international research-horizon scanning; and best practice challenge workshops and conferences. Specifically, the network will create a forum to enable coordinated discussions leading to the formulation of future research bids and world-leading publications.
Please forward this email to your colleagues who may also be interested in participating in the network and encourage them to register. Users can select the amount of information they wish to receive.
We look forward to welcoming you to our kick-off event. Please contact for further information, to ask questions or make any recommendations on the activities and conduct of the network.
