Purpose of the Role:

Structured within the department of Standards and Industry Affairs (SIA), the 5G research team is responsible for delivering the contractual commitments in SRUK’s 5G European research projects. We are a key partner in the flagship 5GPPP Phase 2 project ONE5G, which develops innovative RAN solutions for the 5G-advanced systems envisioned in 3GPP Release 16 and beyond. SRUK contributes to all of the technical work packages of this project and we are looking for a suitable candidate for an internship of 6 months to further enhance our research capacity. The intern will work closely with the other members of the 5G team, who will provide guidance on the research topics/areas. The intern will need to plan and deliver the research to tight time scales, including simulation results for validation. He/she will also present the research findings in the relevant work package tele-conferences and at 4-monthly project plenary meetings, contribute to the project deliverables/ internal reports and also disseminate the research to wider audiences.

Necessary Skills / Attributes

Technical areas of work: The intern is expected to have a thorough knowledge of the key 5G Physical layer research topics including Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA), Massive MIMO, Advanced Co-ordinated Multi Point (CoMP). In addition to the theoretical aspects of these topics, an understanding of how these techniques are currently being adapted in 3GPP standards would be very useful. ONE5G project is looking at optimisations and enhancements beyond the current 3GPP release 15 technologies, so knowledge on Release 15 ‘as a baseline’ would be highly beneficial. Essential qualifications/skills/attributes: i. Post-graduate degree (preferably a PhD) in wireless communications/ signal processing. ii. Good analytical skills in research, demonstrated by high quality publications. iii. Ability to develop complex simulations in MATLAB and to develop code as part of a system level simulator. iv. Good oral and written communication skills. v. Ability to work as part of a team and also self-motivated, results oriented. Desirable skills: i. Prior working experience within European Commission funded research projects. ii. Knowledge on the 3GPP Release 15. iii. Experience in developing/ running a system level simulator.
